Addiction can sneak into a person's life and take over like a hostile army in a war at home. Unfortunately, the addiction is so strong the person is usually unable to fend it off alone. There are intervention measures that can be effective, such as some of the 12 step programs, and some medication assistance therapies. With something like an addiction to sex or shopping, or shoplifting, psychological therapy may be effective.
Dealing with an addiction, and fighting it, requires digging deep into a person's psyche, to discover the hidden agendas and old wounds that want to remain hidden. When someone is addicted to things like alcohol, drugs, or sex, in most cases, there is a desire to escape. There may be old psychological injuries, like abuse, that lead a person to want to numb out and just forget everything through substance abuse. You never know what you will find until a therapist can uncover those hidden secrets.
It has been proven there is a genetic link with alcoholism. Children of alcoholic parents may have a predisposition to developing the addiction through a genetic connection. These children may not heed warnings to stay away from alcohol, even if they have seen a parent die from the disease. Alcoholism can lead to disease, like cirrhosis of the liver, heart disease, overweight, and other deadly ailments. It can result in poisoning, or a person can pass out in the cold and freeze to death, or get into an auto accident and injure or kill not only themselves, but other innocent persons.
With drugs, there are similar developments. The brain will change its functioning visibly in brain scans, with many areas no longer connecting. This also can lead to diseases like AIDS, blood poisoning, and other problems like promiscuous sex and STDs. It has killed many people through accidental or deliberate overdoses. There is a large business in rehabilitation for drug abusers, and schools try to catch children with early anti drug abuse education. Despite the facts that using drugs or alcohol begins on a strictly voluntary basis, once the body catches the addictive cravings, it becomes an addiction. The body may try to develop an immunity, requiring increasing amounts of the drug to have the same effects, but that only increases the problem.
For sex addicts, there are many dangers, of disease, and death. It can cause women to enter prostitution, and men to destroy their family life with their escapades. The bottom line with all these addictions is that there never is enough to satisfy. The reason for the addiction becomes hidden under the take over of the cravings and the addiction lives a life of its own until the body fails and all die. It is not a pretty picture, and in fact, cannot be taken too seriously. These addictions all destroy, families and lives. The urge to escape or numb becomes a race to an end from which there is no recovery. Early intervention and constant vigilance may triumph.
